MathFix Guide

AI math to Word, without broken equations

Why pasted AI answers fall apart in Word and how to get an editable document instead.

Many AI assistants show equations and tables nicely in the chat window. Copy that answer into Microsoft Word and the result is often a mess: dollar signs, backslashes, flattened tables and headings that are just text with pound signs.

Why it happens

AI assistants write in Markdown with LaTeX math. The chat app renders that syntax on screen, but the text you copy still contains the raw markup, for example $x^2 + y^2 = z^2$ or \frac{a}{b}. Word does not interpret Markdown or LaTeX when you paste, so it keeps the characters exactly as written.

What usually breaks

  • Inline and display equations show as plain text with delimiters such as $, $$ or \(.
  • Tables arrive as rows of pipes and dashes instead of a real Word table.
  • Headings and lists keep their Markdown symbols instead of Word styles.
  • Code blocks lose their monospaced formatting.

Ways to fix it

  1. Retype equations in Word's equation editor. Works for a handful of formulas, but is slow for a long answer.
  2. Convert with a command-line tool such as Pandoc. Powerful, but it needs installation, command-line use and often manual cleanup.
  3. Use MathFix. Paste the AI output, review a clean PDF preview, then export an editable DOCX that keeps headings, lists, tables and equations in place.

How to do it with MathFix

  1. Copy the answer from your AI assistant.
  2. Paste it into MathFix on your Mac, iPhone or iPad.
  3. Review the PDF preview.
  4. Export an editable Word document, or share the PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Why do AI-generated equations look wrong in Word?

The copied text contains raw Markdown and LaTeX syntax. Word does not render that syntax when you paste, so equations appear as plain characters.

Can I get an editable Word document from an AI answer?

Yes. MathFix rebuilds the structure of the pasted answer and exports an editable DOCX with headings, lists, tables and equations.

Does this work with answers from any AI assistant?

Yes. Text from any assistant that outputs Markdown or LaTeX can be pasted into MathFix.
